Depending on where you're flying in from, your approach to Zihuatanejo might just offer one of the most breathtaking views in Mexico. As your plane descends, you'll notice the bay below—a true horseshoe-shaped haven with golden sand beaches and shimmering blue waters. Among the five main beaches that dot the bay, Playa La Ropa stands out as my absolute favorite.

The Heart of the Bay
Nestled in the center of Zihuatanejo Bay, Playa La Ropa offers some of the best panoramic views in the area. It's easily accessible, especially through Restaurant La Perla, one of the most well-known beachfront spots.
La Perla consistently serves up fresh seafood and delicious drinks at surprisingly reasonable prices. The menu leans toward traditional Mexican fare, with an emphasis on just-caught fish and shrimp, all made to order. They also rent out tables and chairs right on the beach for a small fee—perfect for settling in for the day under an umbrella with your toes in the sand.

Watersports & Activities
Playa La Ropa isn’t just about lounging—it’s also a hub for watersports and beach fun.
Parasailing over the bay is a must. Whether you go solo or tandem, the 10-minute flight gives you an unmatched aerial view of the entire bay, the boutique hotels dotting the hillside, and the boats drifting below.
Banana boat rides and tubing are available for kids (and adventurous adults) right from the shoreline.
You can also rent jet skis by the half-hour and zip across the water for a thrill.

Spa Services by the Sea
Just steps from La Perla, you’ll find pop-up spa tents offering massages, facials, and manicures—yes, right on the beach. These open-air spas are cleverly set up with dividers for privacy and shade, creating a peaceful oasis. Honestly, I still don’t understand how they manage to do manicures in the sand without smudging the polish—but they do.
Pro tip: The best massage I’ve ever had—anywhere in the world—was from the tent to the left of La Perla. They also offer in-room services if you'd prefer your massage or facial in the comfort of your villa (with air conditioning).

Meet the Beach Vendors: Zihua’s Hardest Workers
As you relax on Playa La Ropa, expect to be approached by some of the hardest-working vendors you’ll ever meet. These folks spend their days walking through the sand, often carrying 30–50 pounds of goods in the hot sun. From handmade jewelry and embroidered dresses to fresh snacks and wooden crafts, the variety is impressive.
Be sure not to miss:
The fired bananas from the smiling young woman with the big tray—sweet, warm, and delicious.
The "Cheese Guy"—you’ll know him by the white bucket. Bernardo Munoz sells homemade Oaxaca string cheese, rolled into tight balls and perfect as a savory beach snack. It’s dry, salty, and absolutely addictive.
Why Playa La Ropa Should Be on Your List
If your ideal beach day includes stunning views, fresh food, friendly locals, affordable spa services, and a chance to really unwind—Playa La Ropa is the place to be. Whether you’re sunbathing, shopping for silver earrings, riding a banana boat, or enjoying a massage in a beachfront tent, there’s no better place to experience the laid-back magic of Zihuatanejo Bay.
