Il Mare: Authentic Italian Dining With One of Zihuatanejo’s Best Views

Any time friends or family visit us at the villas, we make a point of taking them to Il Mare. It is also one of my top restaurant recommendations for our rental guests because it delivers everything people hope to experience while dining in Zihuatanejo: exceptional food, attentive service, a beautiful atmosphere, and one of the most spectacular views in the bay.

The View

Il Mare is perched along the cliffs overlooking Zihuatanejo Bay, offering majestic panoramic views across the water—including a view toward the villas. The sunsets here are absolutely gorgeous, and the setting becomes even more beautiful as the lights begin to appear around the bay.

When making your reservation, be sure to request an oceanfront table. Reservations are highly recommended because Il Mare has earned its reputation as one of the best restaurants in the area and remains consistently busy night after night.

Authentic Italian Food

The food is genuinely Italian, with homemade pastas, sauces, and dishes prepared individually to order. This is not a restaurant serving precooked, mass-produced meals. The kitchen is remarkably accommodating, and many dishes can be modified because everything is prepared fresh.

The wine list is equally impressive, with an extensive and well-curated selection available both by the bottle and by the glass.

Our Favorite Dishes

My favorite appetizer is the traditional Caprese salad. The tomatoes and homemade mozzarella are enormous, fresh, and beautifully presented. This is truly an antipasto meant for sharing—unless you decide to enjoy it as your entire meal, because the portion is that generous.

Those who love a rich, creamy Alfredo sauce will be very happy here. The balance of cheese and cream creates a thick, luxurious sauce that tastes nothing like the commercially produced Alfredo commonly served in American chain restaurants. Combined with the homemade pasta, it is outstanding.

Aharon continually raves about Il Mare’s red sauces, particularly the marinara and traditional tomato sauce. His favorite order is spaghetti topped with a perfectly roasted chicken breast, diced and served over the pasta.

Even the garlic bread deserves attention. Like many restaurants in Mexico, Il Mare uses fresh bread baked locally each day with simple ingredients and without the long list of fillers typically found in mass-produced American bread. This is not the place to pass on the bread. Eat the carbs.

Impeccable Service

The waitstaff is impeccable. The service is polished, attentive, and genuinely five-star. The servers know the menu thoroughly, make excellent recommendations, and are always available without hovering over the table.

Dining at Il Mare reminds me of some of my favorite restaurants in Italy, including the intimate restaurants lining the canals of Venice. The quality of the food, the atmosphere, and the level of service are genuinely that good.
